POETRY
Submit three to five poems of any length and any subject matter. Form may vary, but please do not send “greeting card verse.” Poems should be typed and single spaced, with contact information on each page. We prefer poems under fifty lines but welcome longer poems.
FICTION & CREATIVE NONFICTION
Submit one or two stories/essays at a time. Word limit is 4,000 words per story or essay. Please type, double space, and number the pages. Also, be sure to include contact information and word count on the first page.

Include a short cover letter that includes your contact information, titles of submissions, previous publications if applicable, and other biographical information you think relevant. Submissions not accompanied by a SASE will not be read, and please note we do not return manuscripts. Remember that we are a regional magazine which publishes California writers only. Occasionally we publish writers who have studied, lived, or worked in California but currently reside elsewhere. This is determined at the Managing Editor’s discretion. As you might suppose, the best way to know if your work is suitable for our magazine is to familiarize yourself with the current issue.
We accept submissions from September 1 to December 1 of each year. We prefer unpublished work, but we occasionally accept simultaneous submissions and previously published poems, with notice. Please notify us as soon as possible if one of your poems has been accepted elsewhere. We currently do not accept e-mail submissions, so these will not receive a reply. Response time averages six months to one year, and we rarely comment on manuscripts. Contributors receive one copy, and In the Grove acquires one-time rights and reserves the right to reprint portions or complete poems in future anthologies of the magazine or on our website.
We want memorable poems and stories. Send us your best work. We thank you in advance for the opportunity to read it.
